Create Your Own Celebration Zone!
Setting Up a Celebration Zone
Find a physical space where you can celebrate the successes of the student. It could be a bulletin board, a space on a wall, or the front of the refrigerator. Alternatively, you could create a digital space (or have the student create one) using a document, website, or other computer app. Label it with the student's name and maybe a photo.
Add work samples, comments, photos, quotes, or whatever else captures the student's successful moments — big or small. Encourage the student to add to the Celebration Zone as well.
Find the little things and write an "I Like the Way You . . ." statement to post in the Celebration Zone. For example, I like the way you . . .
Got up and got started by yourself this morning.
Cleaned up after you ate your snack.
Spoke on the phone to your grandmother, asking her questions about her day.
Went to bed on time without me having to nag you.
Sang that song with great feeling.
Put a "Post-it" note on your student's desk, books, or computer after they go to sleep to make them smile in the morning. Share something you're proud of. Tell them to then move it to the Celebration Zone.
Let your student's teacher(s) know what you are doing, and ask them to email or call you with any success stories they have to share.
Ideas for Using a Celebration Zone
Ask a student to post something they produced, in or out of school, that they are proud of. Ask them to share why they chose that particular piece, so that they talk about their success. Stick to the positives. Though you may have ideas for how it could be better, this is not the time for that. That could occur in a "Conversation" at another time.
