Ask Questions
Use a question to start the conversation, such as:
What was the best part of your day today? (It's okay if the answer is recess; then ask what they did at recess.)
What was the toughest part of your day today? (You might then ask what they did to make it through that tough spot or what they could do next time.)
Who did you work with in school today?
How do you think this homework will help you in school?
Talk About the Day
You have news to share, too! Once a student shares information, reciprocate by describing something about your day. Model the give-and-take of a conversation for the student. Where possible, get others involved.
An Insight:
Take the Opportunity to Ask Open-Ended Questions
Consider "What If?"
Ask questions that get students thinking about other situations, such as:
If you were elected president, what's the first thing you'd do?
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go, and why?
If you could meet any famous person, who would you want it to be, and why?
