Know Them by Name
When speaking with your own family members, call them by name. In the community, get to know the names of the other students, in particular, and call them by name when you see them. Encourage your child(ren) to use names when referring to other people and in talking with one another.
Relationships with Community Members Matter
Not only is it important to refer to community members by name, it is also important to know who can help in a time of need.
Say Something Kind
Take a minute to consider a student in your home or community. Then find something kind to say to them. You might comment on something they are wearing. Maybe they make you smile because they are always so positive; tell them that. Praise them for something they've accomplished, even if it's the little things like putting the milk back in the refrigerator. So often, we tend to identify what students aren't doing. We need to be sure to focus on the good that they are doing.
Take Time
In this world today, it's easy to get caught up in how busy we are. Try to take time to do something with a young person. It might be watching a television show together, playing a game, going for a walk, baking cookies, or playing catch. From the youngest to the oldest, children need adults to be active in their lives.
